Forms Competition
Forms are broken up into two categories, WTF and Open.
WTF: is only for forms certified by the World Taekwondo Federation (Taeguk, Koryo, Kumkang, Taebeak, pyong one, ship jin). Two competitors will be competing at the same time out of a division. Each competitor will be given a score by three to five judges, with a 5.5 to a 9.9 score range. Judges will start with the maximum amount of points and deduct by a tenth of a point from there.
Deductions include wrong technique by WTF standards, lack of precision and power, lack of focus, lack of rhythm and not ending in the same spot that the competitor started.
If you want more information for Form competition by WTF standards go to http://www.wtf.org/wtf_eng/site/rules/poomsae.html
Open: is any form not certified by the World Taekwondo Federation. This category in forms has an allotted time of 1 minute 30 seconds to perform. Like the WTF category, two competitors will be competing at the same time in each division. Each competitor will be given a score by three to five judges, with a 5.5 to a 9.9 score range. Judges will start with the maximum amount of points and deduct by a tenth of a point from there.
Deductions include lack of precision and power, lack of focus, and a lack of rhythm.
Pair Form/Team Form Competition
Pair Form is an open form competition that requires 2 members to compete.
Team Forms is also an open competition that requires a minimum of 3 members to compete.
For Pair Form and Team Form, there is an allotted time of 1 minute 30 seconds for competitors to compete. Both may be accompanied by music. Please give the music to the judging table before you start your competition.
Scoring:
Judging is the same as the Form Competition with three to five judges scoring on a scale from 5.5 - 9.9. Judges will start with a 9.9 and deduct by a tenth of a point from there.
The most important thing about pair forms/team forms is the rhythm of the two competitors and their synchronization. Judges will deduct points for every violation where the competitors are not in sync.
Deductions can also occur from a lack of precision and power, lack of focus, and a lack of rhythm.
Breaking
Open breaking is a routine competitor put together with three or more breaks of different kicks or punching techniques. Each division by color and by age has a minimum requirement of techniques they must perform and thickness of the board they must break. This does not mean that what is listed below is what they have to choose from, but this just gives you an idea of what we expect the students to be able to do for their breaking.
Technique requirement set by belt color:
White Belt
Front kick, push kick, ax kick, basic hand strikes
Yellow/Orange Belt
Side kick, step side kick, round house kick, runner round house kick,
Green/Purple/Blue Belt
Hook kick, back kick, double kick, basic jump kick
Red/Red-Black/Brown Belt
Single jump spinning kicks, swing hook kick, tornado kick, multiple breaking combinations.
Black Belt
Multiple jump spinning kicks, multiple kick jumping techniques, power breaks with lower techniques, high level breaking combinations
Board thickness set by age:
10 and under 1/4"
11-13 1/2"
14 and up 1"
Scoring:
Points will be awarded for the difficulty of the break listed below in order from least point award to greatest point award.
Hand Breaks
Standing kicks
Stand spinning kicks
Single kick jump techniques
Combination kicks (depending on the kicks done in the combination)
Jump spinning kicks
Multiple kick jumping techniques
Competitors that perform higher level kicks according to the list below will receive greater amounts of points within a 5.5 - 9.9 scale from a judging panel of three to five.
Competitors will lose points for not breaking the board on the first try. Each competitor gets 3 tries with a deduction for every try. They will also lose points for lack of sportsmanship and technique.
Team Demonstration
Team Demonstration is a competition with a minimum of five members that perform a show that combines all aspects of showmanship out of taekwondo (excluding sparring). Teams are allowed 10 minutes for performance time and must perform three aspects out of taekwondo: Team Forms, Group Breaking, Weapons or Self Defense Skit.
Team Forms: Similar to competition team forms, there has to be a minimum of three team members performing the same form in a synchronized way.
Group Breaking: Requires three or more members of the team demonstrating breaking techniques in a consecutive manner. One break right after the other and three team members are all on the mat at the same time.
Weapons or Self Defense Skit: Weapons will be any weapon performed in a form. This can be accomplished either by an individual or a pair or team performance. Self defense skits are a choreographed fight between 2 or more team members.
Scoring:
Teams will start with a total of 9.9 points (the scale still being a 5.5 - 9.9). Three-five judges will be deducting .2 of a point for every mistake made. Mistakes can be determined by using the same rules for Forms and Breaking.
If a team does not perform one of the required events specified above, that team will lose 2 points.
If a team goes over the 10 minute allotted time, they will lose 1 point for the first 30 seconds over the limit and then 2 points for each 30 seconds thereafter.
10 minutes no point lost
30 seconds over deduct 1 point
1 minute over deduct 3 points
1 minute 30 seconds deduct 5 points (disqualified).
If a team loses more than 4.5 points, they are disqualified.
Olympic Sparring
For sparring, we will be using the WTF standard for sparring competition. Even though we are using WTF standards, we will not be admitting the new revisions set back in 2009; therefore, there will be no extra points for spinning techniques to the body. Also, we will not be implementing a 12 point cap off on the rounds, but to keep competitors safe, we will implement a 7 point spread.
Junior safety rules still apply.

12 to 17 - light head contact
18 and over - full head contact
14 and up - black belts full head contact
